The Pen is Mighter... by ~draco490:icondraco490:

The pen is mightier than the sword,
so they say. For when confronted with adversity,
you can more quickly dispatch your foes with clever words
than sharpened steel.

While the pen is tangible,
the actual weapons, the barbed words, are not.
One might suggest, then,
that the word is actually what is mightier than the sword.

But there is more than one route by which
you can have word. Voice,
for instance, might be mightier than sword.
Unless the sword silences the voice.

So if sword is a counter to the voice
we are back to written word.
And yet we see that it is no invincible matter either.
With what are we to face that which confronts us?

But a rock is mightier than both.
A rock, unmoving, withstands the adversity around it.
The sword stuck upon rock, dulls.
The pen shall not mar the rock.

A rock kicks the pen’s ass.

We have a sign on our hall with a large pen and it has scrawled: "The pen is mightier..." Thus this was conceived. This seemed interesting at the time, though I may move it over to a different category later. Right now, short as it is, it feels like a completed work that conveys a message. If you guys get that message, kudos. I'm not sure I even get it. ::grins::

But paper covers rock!
:icondraco490:
Damn! I thought I had covered everything!

And don't forgetting, swords can cut paper... cause ya know... they're sharp... so sword counters paper, while paper counters rock, and pen.... pen just stands around.... but the ink of a pen can mar the rock with words... so the pen kicks the rocks ass... cause like.... it can treat the rock like paper... and we all know that paper sucks.

I think it would have been more interesting if you had attempted to defend the idiom, since it's not one with a whole lot going for it in terms of imagery. The point of the phrase, I believe, is not to state that what one can do with a pen is more powerful than combat and therefore can replace it altogether. Actually I believe it to mean that the pen can be a means by which to convey thoughts, commands or designs far more destructive than any single action taken with the deadliest of weapons. For instance, which is more deadly: A single H-bomb or the science that led to its discovery? A single suicide bomber or the religious scripture that will lead him to his last action? Therefore the pen is mightier then the sword, simply because it brings about the sword.

And yet the one with the sword, of his own volition, can stop the one with the pen. I think my point was that the statement didn't have a point. One man with a sword can stop one man with a pen before he ever uses his pen to do his work. The idea is that the pen is a stronger weapon for a few reasons, it's versatile in the number of uses it serves. The poem, however, was more of a passing thought than to have a deep meaning.

You ever tried to use a pen to write on a rock? Not an easy thing to do.

But a marker will write on a rock! I agree. It's a silly adage.

But is a marker truly a pen? And then if a marker is, is every inking device a pen? The possibilities are endless... and pointless. ::grins:: Thanks for taking a look at it, though.

Under dictionary.com's second definition for "marker":
"An implement, especially a felt-tipped pen, used for marking or writing."

And under "pen":
"An instrument for writing or drawing with ink or similar fluid..."

So yeah. I wouldn't call a printer a pen, but I would call a marker one. And yes, I do realize how pointless it is to debate this. :)
